Biography • Born April 4, 1928 • Member of Harlem Writers Gild in the 50s • Published 7 autobiographies, 3 books of essays, and several of poetry • Taught at Wake Forest (received first lifetime Reynolds Professorship of American Studies) • First poet to recite at a presidential inauguration since Robert Frost • Spokesperson for black people and women • Has commonly had her books banned in US schools and libraries

Stanzas 1-2 The free bird leaps On the back of the wind And floats downstream Till the current ends And hips his wings In the orange sun rays And dares to claim the sky But a bird that stalks Down his narrow cage Can seldom see through His bars of rage His wings are clipped and His feet are tied So he opens his throat to sing • Personification- “bird leaps on the back of the wind” • Imagery- “orange sun rays” “floats downstream” “his wings are clipped and his feet are tied” • Clear shift from 1st stanza to 2nd from positive to negative

Stanzas 3-4 The caged bird sings With fearful trill Of the things unknown But longed for still And his tune is heard On the distant hill For the caged bird Sings of freedom The free bird thinks of another breeze And the trade winds soft through the sighing trees And the fat worms waiting on a dawn-bright lawn And he names the sky his own • Imagery- “sings with fearful trill” “fat worms” “dawn-bright lawn” • Symbolism- “sings for freedom” singing symbolizes freedom • Personification- “sighing trees” • Shift from 3rd stanza to 4th negative to positive

Stanza 5-6 But a caged bird stands on the grave of dreams His shadow shouts on a nightmare scream His wings are clipped and his feet are tied So he opens his throat to sing The caged bird sings With a fearful trill Of things unknown But longed for still And his tune is heard On the distant hill For the caged bird Sings of freedom • Alliteration- shadow shouts • Repetition of stanza 3 • “Grave of dreams”- representative of dead dreams and hopes • Imagery- “his wings are clipped and his feet are tied” “caged bird sings with a fearful trill”
