  2. Common vs. Proper Nouns • Common • Nouns that are general people, places, titles, etc • Examples: • a boy • a high school • a president of a company • Proper • Nouns that name specific people, places, titles, etc • Examples: • Mike • Fitzgerald High School • President Bush

  3. CAPITALIZATION • Common nouns are NOT Capitalized!!! • The cat is sleeping. • I went to a different country on vacation. • Proper nouns ARE CAPITALIZED!!!! • The cat named Oscar is sleeping. • I went to Italy for vacation.

NOW IT IS YOUR TURN!! • Identify the nouns in the following sentences and designate whether they are common or proper. • The dog wants to go home with my friend, Mary. • Uncle Joe is friends with David’s aunt. • Lakeside Mall is where I go shopping, but my friend goes shopping at a different mall.

  6. Podcast Listen to the podcast of Grammar Girl as she talks about common and proper nouns. Using a highlighter, highlight the important information from the podcast. You will receive a zero if you highlight everything!! On the back of the sheet write three (3) things you found interesting.
