  • In 1928, most Texans had voted for Herbert Hoover for President of the U.S.

  • However, voters were disappointed he had failed to bring the U.S. out of the Great Depression.


FDR

  • As a result, in 1932, almost 90% of Texans voted for Franklin Delano Roosevelt (FDR) for President of the U.S.


New deal
New Deal

  • Roosevelt introduced new laws & programs called the “New Deal” to create jobs & provide relief during the Great Depression.

  • He cheered the U.S. with his campaign song, “Happy Days Are Here Again.”

  • FDR’s New Deal provided help for farmers through the Soil Conservation Service, which taught farmers new ways to reduce loose dust & keep the soil in place.


FDIC

  • Roosevelt’s New Deal helped create the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) in 1933.

  • The FDIC insures deposits at member banks so people don’t lose their money when a bank fails.

  • Roosevelt’s New Deal programs included the Works Progress Administration (WPA), which provided jobs to build schools, hospitals, parks & dams.


Youth programs

  • The National Youth Administration (NYA) provided 16-25 year olds with jobs in offices& libraries.

  • The Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) paid 50,000 young people to build parks & dams.
