Definition • Hitting an object with a paddle or racket • Complex skill with multiple critical cues • Underarm striking pattern cues: • Slanted paddle, paddle way back, opposite foot, follow through, watch the ball • Sidearm striking pattern cues: • Same as underarm except for slanted paddle • Flat paddle, side to target, firm wrist, low to high

  4. Striking with Short Handled Implements • One of the last skills that children develop • Because… • Visual tracking is not refined until later elementary years • Hand-eye coordination is more difficult away from body • Two objects are in motion at once – the racket and object

  5. Important for Children to Learn in PE • Coordination of many skills • Accurately toss or drop the object to be contacted • Visually track the object while its traveling • Contact the object at the right time
