  1. The Hyena Mr. Scott Dahm Media Specialist Johnson Elementary

  2. What I already know: • They are strange-looking – thick neck and long muscular legs • They make scary sounds – crazy giggling • Females are dominant • Pups will try to kill each other • Constantly fighting with lions

  3. What I want to know: • Survival rates of hyenas • Challenges they face • Structure of their families • Why they are so feared

  4. Powerful Body • Most powerful jaws of any other mammal – pound for pound • Strong teeth can crack bones • Stomachs are extremely acidic • Droppings are powdering white because of all the crushed bone

  5. Hyena Pups • Pups will kill each other instinctively • Born black, but change color in a few months • Only 1 or 2 in a litter

  6. Family Life • Females are bigger and rule the clan • The top female hyena and her offspring are dominant of other females • If a mother hyena dies, their offspring will probably die because no other hyena will care for it.

  7. Challenges they face • Farmers shoot or poison them because they prey on livestock • Mostly live on national preserves where they are protected • If parents die, they may be killed by other clan members or be picked on by younger cubs

  8. Scary Animal • High-pitched giggle, “laughing” hyena. • Awkward walking • Rough fur • Eats all of its dinner: horns, bones, teeth, & hooves of prey

  9. Hyena Live! • A day in the life of a hyena cub.
