She was angered by this, so she went to the party and put a golden apple, the Apple of Discord, into the proceedings. There was a description on it that said “for the fairest.” Three goddesses claimed the apple: Hera, Athena, and Aphrodite. They asked Zeus to judge which one was the fairest, he declared the Paris, a Trojan mortal, would judge the cases. Each goddess used there powers in attempt to bribe Paris. Hera offered to make him King of Europe and Asia, Athena offered wisdom and skill in war, and Aphrodite the love of the world's most beautiful woman. Paris accepted Aphrodite's gift and awarded the apple to her. Paris received Helen of Troy, “the face that launched a thousand ships.”

  11. The Parentals!!! • Zeus and Dione • One genealogy gives her parents as Zeus, King of the Gods, and Dione, an early earth/mother goddess. • More commonly, she was believed to be born of the foam in the sea which bubbled around the severed member of Ouranos when Kronos slew him.

  17. Aphrodite And psyche (the bad mother- in- law) Aphrodite was jealous of the beauty of a mortal woman named Psyche. She asked Eros (Cupid) to use his golden arrows to cause Psyche to fall in love with the ugliest man on earth. Eros agreed, but then fell in love with Psyche on his own, by accidentally pricking himself with a golden arrow. Psyches parents visited an oracle who said her fate was to not be with a mortal and that she could find her love on a certain mountain. Eros had bribed the oracle to tell Psyches parents this. So Psyche climbed the mountain. She came to a cave, where she met Eros. Every night they came to this cave “to be together.” Her sisters told her that convinced her that her husband was a monster, and she should strike him with a dagger. So one night she lit a lamp, but recognizing Eros instantly, she dropped her dagger. Oil spilled from the lamp onto his shoulder, awaking him, and he fled, saying "Love cannot live where there is no trust!“ Psyche told her sisters about what happened and the sisters went to the mountain in hope that Eros would fall in love with one of them. Eros did not love them and the sisters fell to their death at the base of the mountain. Psyche went looking for Eros in hope that they would make up. She ran into Demeter, he made her sort grains. When she was finished Demeter told her to find Eros mother Aphrodite. Psyche found Aphrodite who made her do a similar task as Demeter did, but gave an impossible deadline. Eros still loved her so he got ants to help her move the grain into piles. When Aphrodite found she was able to finish she was furious and sent her to get golden wool from the vicious sheep. A river god told her to wait till noon to get the wool. When Psyche came back with the wool Aphrodite sent Psyche to Hades to get some beauty.

  18. Aphrodite and Psyche Continued A voice stopped her at the last moment and told her a route that would lead her to enter and return alive, as well as telling her how to pass the three-headed dog Cerberus, Charonand the other dangers of the route. She was to not lend a hand to anyone in need. She baked two barley cakes for Cerberus, and took two coins for Charon. Psyche got the beauty and left the underworld she decided to open the box and take a little bit of the beauty for herself, thinking that if she did so, Eros would surely love her. Inside was a "Stygian sleep," which overtook her. Eros, who had forgiven her, flew to her body and wiped the sleep from her eyes, then begged Zeus and Aphrodite for their consent to his wedding of Psyche. They agreed and Zeus made her immortal. Aphrodite danced at the wedding of Eros and Psyche, and their subsequent child was named Hedone.
