  5. What is SASIC Training? • Squadron Alcohol Skills Intervention Curriculum impacts all Air Force members • Junior Airman • Role of the Section Leader • Support from Senior Leadership • Builds responsible habits and healthy lifestyles • Builds leadership skills in NCOs

Training • One trainer per installation needed to conduct the training • Someone with substance abuse prevention background • Installation trainer to train leadership on their installation • Training is broken into 3 sessions: • Session 1 - Techniques/Components of SASIC Training • Session 2 - Components of SASIC Training (continued) • Session 3 - Ongoing Role of the Section Leader and Booster Session

  7. Training Conducted by the NCOs • Small group setting • 90 minutes in length • Guided Discussion • Presentations by Section leader/NCO • Reactions/discussion/resistance • “Homework” assignments

  8. Techniques of Training • Discussion vs. Lecture • Taking Advantage of Leadership Role • Listening and Understanding • Don’t Argue with Airmen • Support Positive Change

  9. What do the NCOs learn? • Basic alcohol knowledge • Up and Down effect of alcohol • Monetary cost of drinking • Looking at Expectancies • Risk Reduction techniques • How to talk/counsel Airmen

  10. What is the benefit of SASIC? • SASIC was specifically designed for the military community • SASIC provides not only substance abuse education, but leadership skills as well • This program was extensively researched from the Naval Health Research Center (NHRC) • This program is a behavior modification program designed to change thoughts on heavy alcohol usage • This program will not cost the Air Force any money other then training trainers and class materials

  11. What Results Edwards has had with the SASIC? • SASIC training has been given to 5% of the NCOs on Edwards • The following statistics are based on evaluations from NCOs who have been trained: • On a scale to 1 to 10 based on course effectiveness the SASIC received an average rating of 9.6 • 98% of NCOs want this program to be implemented throughout the Air Force • NCOs report that this type of training should have been done long ago and that it “works”
