  3. A Bit About MrFedley • Where do I come from? Melbourne – Australia • Favorite Hobbies: Home Cinema (Movies), Basketball, AFL, Table Tennis, and Geology (Rocks). • Siblings? One older but very annoying sister.

  4. My School in Australia: Keysborough Secondary College – Coomoora Campus. • Most of my students moved from Cambodia, Vietnam, China and Sudan with their families to live in Australia. • Pet Annoyances: People not listening, being beaten in sport.

  5. Grade 9 Science Breakdown • You will have 3 topics this year. They are: • Chemistry (August 20 – November 23) – Mr Fedley • Biology (November 26 – March 1) – MrRossing • Physics (March 4 – May 31) – MrRossing • At the moment – MrRossing will be writing both of your reports for both semesters.

  7. How Do We Get Marked?? • In Grade9, you will be marked against 3 Criteria in the MYP Science Pilot Program • They Criteria are: • Criteria A: Using Knowledge (8) • Criteria B: Inquiring & Designing (8) • Criteria C: Processing & Evaluating

Basic Class Rules • No talking while someone is talking to the class (this includes the teacher or other students) • We only move around the class with a valid reason (not for the sake of it) or during an experiment • Eating or Drinking in class is a big no-no (*) • When someone is talking, we listen to them • During an experiment, we follow the teachers instructions if they tell us to sit down. • We have fun!

Our Wiki • Go to the following wiki: • http://yis9chem.wikispaces.com • Then join wikispaces and then join the wiki using your YIS email address. • There is not much on the wiki at the moment, but it will include most handouts and PPT’s along with it being an area for general information • There is a discussion area. Please ask questions here and also answer questions for people who need help!!!

Once the booklets are made, we need to complete the work below on the following pages: • Page 1: Grade 9 Chem – Trimeter One (Heading) • Page 2 & 3: Tell me some things about yourself. Do you have any brothers/sisters, favourite movie, favourite sport, what you find annoying etc. • Page 4 & 5: Tell me what you enjoyed and did not enjoy about Grade 8 Science. • Page 6 & 7: What would you like to do/learn about in Grade 9 Chem • Page 8: What are you going to try harder to do in Science this year?

Solids, Liquids and Gases • If a particle is heated, then it becomes more excited and moves around more. • When a particle moves around more, their bonding (how they are held together) can become broken and they change state (eg Liquid to gas) • The opposite happens if a particle is cooled. That is, the particles are less excited and move less. They can form new bonds and they change state (eg gas to liquid)

  14. What Are Atoms? • According to the dictionary, atoms are ‘the smallest particle of an element that can exist either alone or in combination’. • In English, an atom is the smallest thing that we can see under a microscope. Everything is also made of atoms.

  15. Some Deciphering • Everything is made up of particles. These particles are made up of different atoms that have different properties. • You can almost think of atoms as ingredients in food. Differences In Atoms • There are over 100 atoms. • Every atom is different as it contain a unique number of neutrons, protons and electrons. • An electron is found in an electron shell and has a negative charge. • A proton is found in the nucleus and has a positive charge • A neutron is also found in the nucleus and has no charge.

  18. Atoms Atoms are the “building blocks” of all matter and are the simplest form of molecule. They are all made up of protons, neutrons and electrons. They look something like this: The Nucleus – this contains neutrons and protons Electrons – these orbit around the nucleus

Electron Shells • In a stable atom, the atomic number tells us how many electrons or in the atom. • Atoms are found in electron shells which take up most of the space of each atom. • Different electron shells can hold different amounts of electrons • Shell 1 holds up to 2 electrons • Shell 2 holds up to 8 electrons • Shell 3 holds up to 8 electrons

Electron Shells Continued • The shells in in order, starting with the inner one (lowest energy level) • All the elements in a group have the same number of electrons in the outer shell • The group number is the same as the number of outer electrons • Period 0 (Noble Gases) have full shells. • The period number states how many shells there are.
