  1. Stem Summer Bridge 2011 Computer Networking and Printing Technology Jack Taylor

  2. Monday • In computer networking, we got a tour of the building and learned about how routers find a route for a packet to get to its destination computer, and how they are given a security key and must have it to get into the destination computer. It was really cool, and has a lot of applications in my field of interest. • In printing, we learned how big the printing business really is, and how every company, like, ever, needs printed products, and all of the machines and tools we use to make them. We also learned how to use Adobe InDesign to create documents such as business cards.

  3. Tuesday • In computer networking today, we learned what different categories of cables do, like category 5 for computers and category 3 for landlines, and what different kinds of category 5 cables are used for. We also started making our own category 5 cables, which is really cool because I really need some of tose at home. • In Printing, we cut out our business cards and learned how to use different settings and guidelines in adobe InDesign to make our own logo and a notepad featuring that logo and a picture from the internet. Needless to say, we had a lot of fun with our notebook designs.

  4. Wednesday • For the first part of the day, we went on a field trip to ARINC, a communication and internet service company who covers everything from air traffic control to biometrics. They had the coolest technology and really neat biometrics scanners. It was so cool. And they gave us free USB drives, flashlights, calendars, leather portfolios, pens, gum, mints, and lunch. Their generosity was really amazing. • In printing, we learned how to take a picture using PhotoBooth and edit it in Adobe Photoshop, and I cut out and glued my notebook.

  5. Thursday • In computer networking today, we made category 5 Rollover, Straight-Through, and Crossover cables. We also learned how to connect two PC’s using two Straight-Through cables and a switch. • I won’t have the chance to write about printing today, because I am turning in this journal before lunch. I am kind of sad to leave CAT North, and I really look forward to coming back sometime, because I learned a lot and I was very interested in both computer networking and printing.
