  1. Book 2, Chapter 5 By: Samantha Peel “The Jackal”

  2. Sydney Carton leaves the tavern and goes to Mr. Stryver’s to drink and discuss court proceedings • Stryver is nicknamed “the lion” and Carton, “the jackal” as a result of Darnay’s case • Stryver expresses grief toward Carton’s moodiness and laziness, referring back to their school days • Carton claims he has no other choice but a life in rust • Attempting to change the subject, Stryver mentions Lucie Manette’s beauty • Carton disagrees and refers to her as a “golden haired doll”, but Stryver questions his true feelings • Carton leaves Stryver’s apartment, having short-term visions of a successful future. He quickly visits reality and once home, cries himself to sleep. Key Elements

  3. Simile:Stryver’s ambition drove him forward “The florid countenance of Mr. Stryver might be daily seen, bursting out of the bed of wigs, like a great sunflower pushing it’s way at the sun from among a rank garden-full of flaring companions.” (90) • Symbolism: Stryver takes the credit while Carton is crucial in execution “At last, it began to get about…although Sydney Carton would never be a lion, he was an amazingly good jackal.” (90) • Foreshadowing: Carton denies seeing the beauty in Lucie although he was very sympathetic during the court case “Quick to see what happened! If a girl, doll or no doll, swoons within a yard or two of a man’s nose, he can see it within a perspective glass . I pledge you, but I deny the beauty.” (94) Literary Devices

  4. “Waste forces within him, and a desert all around, this man stood still on his way across a silent terrace, and saw for a moment, lying in the wilderness before him, a mirage of honorable ambition, self denial, and perseverance…he threw himself down in his clothes on a neglected bed, and its pillow was wet with wasted tears.” (95) Essential Quote
