Recall • Friction: A force that opposes motion. • Comes in two types: • Static: Friction that opposes motion from starting. • Kinetic: Friction that opposes motion from continuing. • From our lab: • Static friction > Kinetic friction • Friction is surface dependent. • Rubber stopper vs. wood block

  3. Calculating Friction • Friction is calculated using the following formula: Where: FK = Force of friction (kinetic) FS = Force of friction (static) μ K = Coefficient of kinetic friction μS = Coefficient of static friction FN = Normal Force m = mass (kg) g = 9.8 m/s2

Eg.1: A wooden block is sliding on a steel ramp (μK = 0.25) horizontally with a mass of 10kg. • What is the magnitude of the frictional force? • What acceleration does it cause? • If the block is traveling at 6 m/s, how long will it take to stop? • Eg.2: A hockey player is gliding on the ice with a mass of 75kg. If the magnitude of the frictional force is 174N, determine μK .
