  3. The guiding rule • Attack the problem not the person

  4. The self-test • Why am I giving this criticism? • What is a desired positive outcome?

  5. The EPM formula E = empathize P = Pinpoint problems M = move forward and work toward a solution together

  6. Receiving criticism Anticipate - ask “what can I learn or how can I improve?” Loss of self-worth is a choice. Ask Questions - so you understand Agree - with something Analyze - think before you respond. Have the intention to resolve positvely

  7. Learning form criticism • Look for facts • understanding their perception of you helps you deal with them effectively (remember 4th SDI premise) • Sometimes it is a personality difference (Motivational Value System)

  8. Conflict preparation Think of a person you have conflict with, • what is the situation? • Self-test - what would be a positive outcome? • Complete steps 8 - 10, page 4 in the feedback section. Remember EPM • empathy … • pinpoint problems… • move on to joint problem solving
