Short description of the case (1) • Focus on innovation and creativity as main driver for regional and economic development • Focus on cluster implementation for economic development • Based on common “fields of excellence” as way of smart specialisation • Key players • Clusters (Healthcare industry; ICT, Media, Creative industry; Optics; Energy technologies; Transport , Mobility, Logistics) • International renowned universities, research institutes (e.g., Max Planck Institutes, Fraunhofer, Helmholtz Centres , Leibniz institutes) • Regional governments, regional economic and innovation agencies

Short description of the case (2) • A single strategy for two regions, representation of all the actors on the international level, marketing of the regional competencies • Main competitive advantages • Tworegionsfor a singleobjective • Renownedresearchpartners • Investment in RTD among the top regions in Germany • Presence of international firms

Ambitions and strategic actions in the case in the coming year • Implementation of the strategic plan for the clusters (inclusive activities for internationalisation) • Know-how and technology transfer, start-ups, transfer via skilled personnel • Regional support for innovation and technologies; build-up of infrastructure for innovation • Already existing cooperation at the EU Level (e.g. in the network of regions awarded as European Entrepreneurial Regions) activities will depend on the interests of the clusters
