Workshop racism leads to violence

  • As part of our Comenius Project «  Schools without borders », the objective of our workshop is to run an activity around the subject : "Racism leads to violence".

  •  Therefore, we decided to use a well-experimented methodology in such activities.

  •  Our method aims to bring a new look on the others and to approach differently the world reality in which we live...

  •  We are looking for clarification, refocussing in order to get a better understanding and so to avoid the " shock of lack of knowledge".

  •  We really think that our lack of knowledge is at the root of numerous misunderstandings, which can lead ,at the end to problematical situations.

Workshop racism leads to violence

  • Our approach aims to invite to thinking over, using practical examples and statements, for a new look, a new approach of culture...

  •  Therefore, we base on a procedure of unbuilding/building of images brought by the students with the aim of shifting their representations...

  •  We aim at the working out of a common vocabulary : sensitive areas, critical incidents, cultural shocks, ...

  • Finally, we try to look for useful ressources, together with them in front of cultural shocks.

  • Together we think about the management of thread feeling, freezing in order to carry on an interaction with the one who is at the origin of this identity destabilization.

Workshop racism leads to violence

Promoting the building of a crosscultural society and making people aware of crossculture, proposed as a way to follow together.

Workshop racism leads to violence

  • To make people able to :

  • Approach the world in the light of crossculture

  • Understand and analyze the building of prejudices and stereotypes

  • Understand the causes of migrations, according to North-South relationships

  • Know the facts of migrations in Belgium (types, status, statistics, legislation, politics, history...)

  • Unbuild wrong representations of migrations

Workshop racism leads to violence

  • Build links between integration, social cohesion and  how to "live better together".

  • Get a common vocabulary

  • Deal with sensitive subjects

  • Start to change

  • Struggle against discriminations and identify the mechanisms which make that, for equal competences or equal potential, some people suffer from moral, social, professional damage...

  • David, moderator at CAL Charleroi (Centre of Secular Action) proposes to watch several short films to start the discussion. Some are really calling.

  • For example :

  • An American woman surrounded by her children insists on the fact that she wants to preserve a pure race.

  • Conversations between a lady-caretaker of a residential buiding and some of the tenants (racist clichés)

  • Sketch of humorist Anthony Cavanagh : “I’m looking for a tenant, yes, but …”

  • An old drunkard-woman in the underground insulting foreigners

  • A black young man in a lift with a lady behind him holding tightly her handbag

The moderator asks the participants to react, the discussion is filmed (by Elsa from CRIC):

  • According to the various reactions of the participants, Dursun, the other moderator and the participants themselves notice that, very often, there are mix-ups because of a lack of knowledge, from which, the necessity of clarifying certain points : Arab? Maghreb? Muslim? Ramadan?

  • He gives us some historical-geographical explanations.

  • The lack of knowledge creates generalities : ex. : In Belgium there are more Hallal butcher’s than Belgian butcher’s !

  • Then, other questions are asked :

  • What does it mean : “a Belgian”?

  • Immigration, when and why?

  • Why are some immigrants better accepted (confusion : origin, religion, race)

Workshop racism leads to violence

In conclusion, it’s important to listen to each other to be able to understand.

We can discuss without judging, without demolishing.

That’s how we learn about the others and that’s the way to break down the barriers so that pacific coexistence can be possible.
