  1. Henry Fielding

  2. His conception of the novel • He thought that the novel should depict humble, contemporary life as the classical epic had done the more primitive world, so he called his novel “a comic epic in prose” 滑稽的散文/无韵史诗.

  3. This conception led him to introduce a burlesque element into the style. And he endowed the novel with a notion of form.

  4. His novels • 1.well-constructed to an inevitable ending ,the third person narration ( omniscient narrator) • (c.f. Richardson’s epistolary form; Defoe’s picaresque form) • 2.lively and dramatic dialogues and other theatrical devices (suspense, coincidence etc.) • 3.his style: clear, supple, familiar, easy, vivid and vigorous.

  5. Joseph Andrews • Parson Adams • A character simultaneously comic and sympathetic; • heroic in strength and nobility and lovable in his unselfish kindness • but his unsophistication making him the focus of the basic satiric theme
