  3. What is a convention? • An internationallyagreed document that: • Recognizesuniversalhumanrights standards • Identifies obligations on States to promote and protecthumanrights • Sets out national and international monitoring and implementationmechanisms

  4. What is the purpose of the Convention? To promote, protect and ensure the full and equal enjoyment of all human rights and fundamental freedoms by all persons with disabilities and to promote respect for their inherent dignity

  5. Whom does it protect? Personswithdisabilitiesincludethosewho have long-termphysical, mental, intellectual or sensoryimpairmentswhich in interaction withvariousbarriersmayhindertheir full and effective participation in society on an equal basis withothers • Consider: • Diversity of disabilities – physical, mental, intellectual, sensory • Womenwithdisabilities • Childrenwithdisabilities • Olderpersonswithdisabilities • Others?
