  2. Meet Andy Warhol “I never met an animal I didn’t like!” 1928-1987

  3. Andy’s Early Years • Andy Warhol was born in Pittsburg, Pennsylvania. His mom and dad were poor immigrants –people who moved to America from another country called Czechoslovakia. • When Andy was about your age (6) he got very sick from Scarlet Fever and was in bed for a very long time. • His mom Julia was talented and showed Andy how to draw while he was ill. He passed time by doodling comics and looking at pictures in magazines while in bed. His mom also let him have a cat named Sam. Sam was his good friend during these hard and lonely times.   4. Hooked On Art Andy was hooked on art. When he got better, he went to “Saturday School”-- art classes at a nearby library. He drew animals in science class and flowers from his garden. In High School, he showed great talent for drawing and design so his mom encouraged him to continue. In fact, Andy became the first person in his family to graduate from college. What do you think he studied? After college, he got paid for drawing pictures for magazines and ads. He was very successful. He even illustrated a book about 25 cats called “Cats, Cats, Cat.” (hit enter) What do you think he named all the cats in his book? Which one of Andy’s cats is an adult? Which one look like its baby?

  5. Andy’s Style • Andy wanted to be a famous artist and to sell his work to Art museums. So he started to make prints about everyday things that were popular like: movie stars, food he ate as a kid even well known characters. • He became known for repeating things in blocks and using bright colors. • Can you name a shape that he likes to repeat? • Do you know any of these characters? (Hit enter 4 x’s to change each image after Mickey) His dream came true! He became a WORLD Famous. This is an art Museum in Edinburgh, Scotland.

  6. Vanishing Animals • Andy loved animals all his life! He began to worry about them because so many wild creatures began to disappear from earth. He decided that he could let the world know about the vanishing animals by making some special art. So he picked ten creatures that were disappearing. • He also decided to give some of the money made from the sale of his “Vanishing Animals” art to groups that would help save them like the World Wildlife Fund, zoos and natural history museums. • (Hit backspace if you want see all the animals at on the page again.   7. Think, Pair & Share • Andy thought of using baby animals for his series because they are cute and everyone loves them. He used Adult animals instead? • Can you think of a reason why? • Can you match the baby animal (or offspring) to the adult animal in Andy’s art? • Volunteer 1 steps forward to match an eaglet to the adult Bald Eagle • Volunteer 2 steps forward to match a pollywog to the adult Pine Barrens Tree Frog • Volunteer 3 steps forward to match a caterpillar to the adult San Francisco Silverspot (Hit enter 3 x’s to change animal images) Bald Eagle Pine Barrens Tree Frog San Francisco Silver Spot

  8. Art Edventures Sample Now it is time for you to make art of an adult and baby butterfly just like Andy Warhol!

Project Art EDventures • “Baby”/Caterpillar • Upper left and lower right blocks • If possible, they should practice on a piece of paper first before drawing this on the plexi (Sharpies are permanent!) • Step #1)In the upper left block draw 8 straight lines in the middle of the block. • Step #2)Add humps to connect the lines on top • Step #3)Add bumps to connect the lines on the bottom • Step #4 Add details like some feet, a head and a tail • Repeat in Lower Right Block Andy Warhol - “8 Is Great!” • Four Block Review: Can you see how four blocks repeat like in Andy Warhol’s art? Show the kids: upper left (pink), lower left (yellow), upper right (green), lower right (blue.) • Plexi Sides Review: We will be using both sides of our plexi so it is very important that you START with the side that has a piece of tape on top. (These should be pre-marked with a black Sharpie with perpendicular lines to make four blocks and a piece of colored painters tape should mark this side.) • In a bottom corner, they should sign their name (not too big.) If they don’t know how, someone should help them. • Step 2-Butterfly (Adult)/Upper Right and Lower Left Block • Draw two big number 8s next to each other (leaving a little space in between) • These will become butterfly wings. • -Add two shapes inside the wings • -Add a “hot dog” shape between the two 8s to make the body. • -Add two antennas on top of the body • Step 3-Sign Name/Draw the Paw 8 8 Step 1 Step 2 Step 3 Step 4 8 lines humps bumps details

  10. Project Art EDventures • “Adult” Butterfly • Upper Right and Lower Left Block • Draw two big number 8s next to each other leaving a little space in between them. (If they have a hard time making the number eight, they can draw two circles touching each other instead.) • These will become butterfly wings. • Step #5 Add two shapes inside the wings • Step #6 Add a “hot dog” shape between the two 8s to make the body. • Step #9 Add two antennas on top of the body • Repeat this the lower left block Painting Flip your plexi over - the tapped side should be touching the table. Paint: Give the kids four brightly colored paints on a plate with a brush. They should not mix them. Step 10-Paint the body of their caterpillars. Step 11-Paint the butterfly wings and bodies various colors. Step 12-Paint around the outside of the bodies in each block with a different color. Step 13-Letdry then a volunteers should spray them with acrylic sealer. Step 14-Return their dry and sealed art to their teacher with hanger (ribbon/string/wire and optional beads) attached. 8 8

  11. Supply List • Plexiglass-8 x 6 ish pieces with two perpendicular lines pre-marked with Sharpie to make four equally sized blocks. The plexi should be pre-drilled with two holes near the top for hanging. • Black Sharpie markers • Copy paper marked with four blocks for kids to practice • Bright Paint -4 colors per child-should not mix it! • Paint brushes-one per chld • Water containers-one per table • Paper plates-one per child • Acrylic sealer (spray) • Painters tape to mark the sides for the kids • Wire, ribbon or colored hemp for hanging approximately 8 “ long. • Beads (optional) • Paper towels for cleaning the brushes between colors

Explain the similarities and differences in plants (color, size, appearance, etc.).c. Recognize the similarities and differences between a parent and a baby.d. Match pictures of animal parents and their offspring explaining your reasoning (for example: dog/puppy; cat/kitten; cow/calf; duck/ducklings, etc.).e. Recognize that you are similar to and different from other students (senses, appearance).Teacher note: Be sensitive to the fact that some children have parents who are not their biological parents. • SKCS5 Students will communicate scientific ideas and activities clearly.a. Describe and compare things in terms of number, shape, texture, size, weight, color, and motion.b. Begin to draw pictures that portray features of the thing being described.

He even made a series of prints of endangered animals just to help them.
