  2. Warm-up • Today is 11/6, day 37 – 2 sheets of paper • Describe the last wedding you attended (or saw on TV, if you’ve never attended one). Compare and contrast it with Lindo’s marriage in “Red Candle.” What was similar? What was different? • Review the chapters for the reading quizzes.

  3. Motif –(pre-AP) • is any recurring element or repeated pattern that has symbolic significance in a story. • Can be image, idea, language, or symbol that comes up again and again in a work. • NOT theme, but can be part o fone

  4. JLC Motifs • One common motif in Tan’s novel is the issue of family respect. Throughout the novel, you will read of many instances where mothers and daughters have different views on this motif because of the culture in which they were raised. • In Chinese culture, respect is automatic and permanent; • in the U.S.,it is seen as a quality that is earned and temporary.

  5. PIG Activity – Wanted Poster • An-mei’s mother is seen as a traitor for havng committed crimes against the family. Create a wanted poster for An-mei’s mother. • Include the following: • • a picture • • description of traits–eye color, height, weight, skin color, etc. • • the accused crimes • • date of disappearance • • reward • You may choose to add to this list. Feel free to make up some of the traits, as Tan does not provide all of this information.

  6. Individual Work • Half page and half page individual writing assignment: newspaper column, graphic novel, or creative layout • Write a etiquette guide for visitors to a pre-revolutionary Chinese wedding. Describe at least FIVE aspects of Chinese culture they will experience and what things symbolize. • Write a “how to be a good wife” guide for brides-to-be in prerevolutionary China. Explain what they must do for their husband and mother-in-law/family. • Complete graphic organizer over three mothers so far. As you read “Moon Lady,” complete the cart (due Fri)
