  1. Family Links • The Family Links Nurturing Programme is an integral part of John Watson School and Wheatley Nursery Schools ethos. • Each Class throughout the school follow a 10 week programme.

  2. Circle time • Classes have circle times, where they discuss and write class rules (Good and Bad Choices). • Circle time gives us an opportunity to discuss feelings and start to develop children’s emotional literacy.

  3. Consistency • All staff receive training to ensure consistency in our practice and enables us to all use the same language and positive behaviour strategies throughout the school. • It can take time for children to get used to these strategies it is important to persevere.

  4. Family Links Language Examples of the language we use are; • Choices & Consequences; • Personal power • Praise & rewards • Time out....To calm down • Warm and Fuzzy or Cold and Prickly (to describe feelings) Good choice!

  5. Choices & consequences Good choices • Gentle touches • Kind voice • Sharing • Being safe Bad choices • Hurting touches • Unkind words • Snatching or taking toys • Dangerous actions

  6. Personal Power • Good choices like sharing & keeping calm can be hard • This is when children can use “Personal Power” • Encouraging children to use their personal power is a way of helping them learn to be respectful & thoughtful towards other & themselves. • Sometimes children have a super hero. I use my personal power to make good choices.

  7. Praise is Magic!

  8. Praise Praise for doing: • Good listening • Good walking • Good sharing Praise for being: • Lovely smile • I love your shoes • I love your hair

  9. Praise & rewards • One of the most effective positive behaviour strategies we use is Praise. • praising children can enhance self-confidence and self-esteem if it is given well and is genuine. • We praise good behaviour and ignore bad behaviour because......

  10. What we pay attention to is what we get more of.

  11. TIME OUT...... • .....to calm down is another positive behaviour strategy we use in school. It is intended to be brief and enables children to have a short cooling off period.

  12. Time Out works best when a child doesn’t want to miss Time in

  13. Adaptability • Family Links is a programme based on studies & research of successful interventions to improve self esteem & behaviour • It recognises that we are all individuals sometimes with very different experiences & backgrounds. • The framework & language can easily be adapted to suit peoples likes, experience, age, stage & understanding.
