  1. GAME plan By Brittany Keller

  2. Step 1: Set goals Goal: Learn about role of cell phones in education Subgoals: • How cell phones enhance learning for students • Benefits and issues with cell phones in teaching • Ways cell phones can be used in the classroom • How to overcome issues of cell phones

  3. Step 2: Take action • Researched reliable, unbiased websites on topic • Researched topics in textbook • Read case studies and looked at examples • Looked at both sides of argument • Organized/integrated information • Made PowerPoint to demonstrate knowledge

  4. Step 2: Take action (continued) • Resources • http://www.iste.org/docs/excerpts/CELUSE-excerpt.pdf • http://www.scholastic.com/browse/article.jsp?id=3751073 • http://www.ascd.org/publications/educational-leadership/oct10/vol68/num02/Cell-Phones-as-Teaching-Tools.aspx • http://www.debate.org/opinions/should-students-be-allowed-to-use-cell-phones-in-school • http://blog.joelmhoffman.com/2011/06/30/why-i-allow-cell-phones-in-my-classes/ • http://www.nea.org/home/41992.htm • http://www.verizonwireless.com/wcms/consumer/products/education-bundle.html • http://education.cu-portland.edu/blog/tech-ed/pros-and-cons-of-allowing-digital-devices-in-the-classroom/ • http://healthresearchfunding.org/cell-phones-classroom-pros-cons/ • Transforming Learning with New Technologies 2nded

  5. Step 3: Monitor • First monitored progress for midterm • Reflected and saw I was starting to make progress • Changed product idea from paper to posting on wiki • Monitored while researching more thoroughly • Narrowed focus to just cell phone use in schools not relationships • Reflected and saw that I was making good progress • In addition to posting on wiki, I added the idea of a PowerPoint to demonstrate what learned

  6. Findings: • Goal: Learn about role of cell phones in education • Intro: I learned that cell phones can be used in many ways that I had never thought of before. Of course students like the idea, but teachers/schools are hesitant because of the many negative ideas we have about cell phones. Through my examination, I see that the positives may outweigh the negatives. It all depends on the teacher and their style.

  7. How can cell phones enhance learning for students? • Engages/appeals to students • Motivates students to want to learn and become active learners • Increases participation • Adapts to student focused learning styles • Makes learning fun

  8. Pros of Cell Phones in Education • Enhances learning for students (all bullets underneath previous slide also apply here) • Access classroom information from anywhere at anytime • Communication between student/teacher outside of school (ask questions/send reminders for tests) • Use special features (calculator, timer, camera, video, recorder, etc) • Saves money for school by not buying extra tools (such as above special features)

  9. Pros of Cell Phones in Education (continued) • Unlimited access to world-wide web information/research • Access educational apps • Most students do own cell phones but sharing/collaborating works just as well • Use QR codes • Use phones to set reminders to study

  10. Pros of Cell Phones in Education (continued) • Potential for mobile study • Helps prepare for future use since all cell phones are part of everyday life • Teaches how to use cell phones responsibly and for other purposes • Gives peace of mind • Instant access to information

  11. Pros of Cell Phones in Education (continued) • Supports differentiating instruction • Improves relationship between student/teacher • Allows teacher to do things they normally couldn’t • Video access • Instantly post/update things

  12. Cons of Cell Phones in Education • Distractions • Use for non educational purposes (texting in class, surfing the web) • Teacher may not know how to use it • Not all students may have cell phones • Pressure from parents/school

  13. Cons of Cell Phones in Education • Harmful effects of digital devices • Access to inappropriate material • Potential for cheating • CyberBullying/Predators • Takes time to research ways to incorporate into lessons effectively • Students may try to access you 24-7

  14. Ways tobe Used in Education 1.Use in place of student response systems Poll Everywhere: make surveys to access student knowledge 2. Student/class blogs www.blogger.com from cell phones • Easily upload pictures, videos, and information 3. Special features • Use as timer for science experiments • Use as calculators for math problems • Take pictures/record experiments to write reflection on later • Record student discussions when there are multiple groups so you can hear everyone’s group

  15. Ways to be Used in Education(continued) • Twitter • Follow line by line literature accounts to discuss each isolated line • Post reminders • Connect with other educators • Use hashtags to read about relevant information • Communicate with students • Send reminders for upcoming projects • Easy access for students to ask questions • QR codes • Scavenger hunt with riddles about content • Quick access to other videos and sites with extra information

  16. Ways to be Used in Education (continued) • MobileStudy.org • Develop quizzes students can access outside of class • Quick research for class discussion • If a question comes up about a relevant topic, children can immediately find more information to extend discussion and understanding

  17. How to Overcome Issues • Lack of access to cell phone • Do survey before attempting to see how many have phones and what features they have to see if worth it • Share/collaborate • Talk to company about funding/supplying cell phones for education • Ask for old phones/donations • Safety (cyberbullying/personal info/predators) • Talk with students about safety before, during, and after use • Monitor use • Set up limits • Never give out personal info • Make sure to provide safe sites/resources • Emphasize importance of respecting one another and potential negative results such as leading to suicide

  18. How to Overcome Issues • Distractions • Make sure volume is off • Monitor student use • Make them keep it out of sight or on edge of desk when not using in class • Lack of teacher knowledge/time • Connect with other educators on blogs/social networking sites • Take time off to research

  19. How to Overcome Issues • Lack of school/parent support • Demonstrate how it can improve learning • Show how it makes work easier • Explain how saves money and offers different experiences couldn’t normally access • No balance of work/personal life with cell phone access • Establish certain time limits unavailable (no contact after 9pm-6:30am)

  20. Examples of Apps/Software for Cell Phones • GoKnow software: turns smartphones to computers with word processors, spreadsheets, etc • Poll Everywhere:surveys/response systems for phones • Twitter:connect, reminders • Kaywa:QR reader • Mobile Study: study quizzes on the go • Oxford Dictionary Software: access words for writing

  21. Examples of Apps/Software for Cell Phones • Graph Viewer Software: allows to make graphs • Quizlet app: helps study with quizzes • Ebooks: allows to read/access books • Tutor.com: own personal tutor for children • Evernote: create, organize, outline notes or lesson plans • Mobile Mouse Pad: turns phone into remote for interactive whiteboard

  22. Evaluate/Extend • I have met my goal and subgoals • Approach of taking steps, planning, and researching were successful • I could have used a concept map to show relationship among ideas • I could have created better deadlines for myself on how much research I should have done by certain time • Next time I should start of making sure my goal is not too much • Extend: I could further explore how cell phones do affect relationships or how tablets, the next size up, portable computer-like device can be used in classrooms
