  1. Academic Focus What is it and what do we do?

  2. Academic Focus is a designated time from 7:30 – 8:00 where students will have time for enrichment, reading, intramurals, and Character Council Lessons. • You will report to Academic Focus each and every day. • If you arrive at school after 7:30 a.m., you must go to the office to get a pass. Students arriving without a pass to Academic Focus after the bell has rung, will be sent to the office. What is it?

  3. Sit in your assigned seat each day. • No food, drinks, or use of electronic devices permitted (including cell phones), unless using an Ipad for school work. • There are no passes out of Academic Focus, unless you have a pass from a teacher for enrichment or intervention. Enrichment/Intervention means getting extra help in a class, or making up assignments, quizzes, or tests. Procedures

  4. If you are not involved in any enrichment/intervention activities, you will work or read SILENTLY during this time. This is a great time to study, complete unfinished homework, read, or work on projects. • The Academic Focus Schedule: • Monday: Academic Focus (Enrichment/Intervention) • Tuesday: Sustained Silent Reading • Wednesday: Intramurals for students who qualify • Thursday: Academic Focus (Enrichment/Intervention) • Friday: Character Council Lesson Procedures and Schedule

  5. Welcome to 9th Grade! • Attendance • Seating Chart • Schedule questions or concerns • Rules of the Classroom • Procedures • Journal • Fib Thursday, August 14th

  6. 1. Be in your assigned seat when class starts. • 2. Do the journal entry that is posted on the screen. These will be done electronically on the Ipads (hopefully) in the near future. Journals will be graded-approximately 10 points per week (that’s 90 points per quarter!). Please feel free to share out when called on. Everyone’s opinion/answer is important and it gets boring listening to the same people share out each day. • 3. Put Ipads away unless they are being used in class that day. Failure to comply will result in your Ipad being taken from you and turned into the office. Remember: the Ipad belongs to the school district, not you! Rules/Procedures of this Classroom!

  7. 4. This class will run smoothly and be enjoyable if everyone (teachers included) shows respect for everyone in the room. This includes, but is not limited to: • Allowing the teacher to teach the class (be quiet and attentive unless called on). • Respecting other’s property, space, comments, feelings, etc. • Respect yourself. Do things that are in your BEST interest. Rules/Procedures of the Classroom Cont.

  8. 5. Failure to respect others and disrupting other student’s ability to learn will result in: • Directed to a Safe Seat to complete a Think Sheet • Being unsuccessful in a Safe Seat will lead to a Buddy Room • Being unsuccessful in a Buddy Room will lead to Recovery Room • You must be successful with a Think Sheet and in all these rooms to go back to your regular seat. Rules/Procedures of the Classroom Cont.

  9. Tardies: If you are tardy to class, enter the classroom quietly and have a seat in the Safe Seat. You are not in trouble and will not be required to complete a Think Sheet. • Excessive Tardies will result in parent contact, discipline referrals, and detentions. Refer to the student handbook for specifics. Rules/Procedures of the Classroom Cont.

  10. Turning in work: Please put your name on all of your work. • Late work is accepted, but not for full credit. Remember: partial credit is better than none. • Please stay in your seat until you have permission to move out of your desk. This includes pencil sharpening, tissues, restroom/locker, or nurse. • What to do when finished working: turn in your assignment, then work on your Anchor Project, other homework, or read. • Missing work: You are responsible for all work even if you are absent. Get the work missed and turn it in as soon as possible. Rules/Procedures of the Classroom Cont.

  11. Technology: iPads will be used nearly every day. Bring them charged each day to class. They will be used for assignments ONLY. • Cell Phones will NOT be on or used during class time or they will taken from you and turned in to the office. Rules/Procedures of the Classroom Cont.

  12. Fire/Fire Drill: Quickly and quietly exit the room, turn right to the end of the hall, turn right and go through the cafeteria doors to the parking lot. Stay with your class so roll can be taken. • Tornado/Tornado Drill: Quickly and quietly exit the room, turn right to the end of the hall, turn right and go through the cafeteria towards the upper gym. From the upper gym, take the stairs down to the boys’ locker room. Sit against the wall, ducked down, with your hands covering your head. Remain like this quietly until you are told it’s safe to return. Rules/Procedures of the Classroom Cont.

  13. Web site for this class: http:// crew71la.weebly.com • On this web site you will have a link to me and Mrs. Shrum, and on the Daily Activities page you will see what we have done and what is due nearly every day. Stay in Touch

  14. Name a person in your life that you respect (parent, sibling, other relative, neighbor, coach, celebrity, etc.). • Explain what this person does or says that deserves your respect. Journal-Thursday, August 14th
