Session Objectives To explore the theme on teacher education holistically with a particular emphasis on transformative learning To share opportunities for collaborative implementation of teacher education projects To highlight critical actions towards developing RCE capacities to foster transformative teacher education

  4. Making this happen in the RCE Community There was broad consensus on the need for a quality teacher education model and the discussion centred around. • What is needed in the context of teacher education to make this happen? • What evidence do we have that this model is effective?

  6. Shared Experiences • RCE Crete • The system needs to transform not reform. Teachers are not taught to be ‘transmitters of knowledge’ but to become ‘agents of change’ • E.g. Wiki • RCE Lagos • Engaged students using a participatory method • Technology to the child’s needs not to the ‘old’ curriculum • Grand Rapids • Tool box guide driven by students.

Shared Experiences • RCE Delhi • A movement away to a more project based curriculum. • Development of key competencies • Communication skills ( including ICT) • A teacher manual is still necessary • RCE Portugal • New ‘school kits’ based on • Values • Science enquiry • RCE Nuremburg • Teachers learned from a social media project.

Way Forward • RCE Rhein Meusse • We need a global learning space – link to UNU/UNESCO • Create synergies using thematic ideas e.g. climate change • RCE Toronto • Challenge members states with evidence • RCE ( Detlev) • Embrace EC projects e.g. Mobile phone App to measure social and economic criteria alongside carbon emmissions • RCE Vienna ( Marissa) • Link the ‘quality model’ to school development processes • Train and involve all school stakeholders e.g. school energy managers and ‘intermediaries’ • RCE Gratz • Shift culture – peer training of teachers
