  2. Overview According to the 2013 6th Edition of IDF Diabetes Atlas for MENA Region: 1-KSA ranks No. 1 with a prevalence of 23.7% for adults (20-79) = 3.6 million diabetics. 2-KSA is the highest in the MENA Region for children with type 1 diabetes (10-14 years) with 31.4 children in 100,000.

  3. Children Health & Safety Children are our future SDEA provides education on : 1-Nutrition. 2-Health. 3-Safety. 4-Obesity.

  5. Children Health & Safety 1-Healthy Eating. 2-Hand washing. 3-Dental Care. 4-Museum visits. 5-Parental group sessions. 6-Developing relationships.

  6. Sweet Smiles Club Sweet Smiles Club provided a two weeks educational camp covering: 1-Health and nutrition. 2-Insulin. 3-Exercise. 4-Dental care. 5-Diabetes emergencies. 6-Educational games and quizzes.

  7. Sweet Smiles Club Sweet Smiles Membership card and privileges: 1-Reduced prices for special requirements. 2-Webpage with educational tips and interactive stories.

  8. Women Health and Safety SDEA established a Women’s Health Committee.Programs include: 1-Weight management. 2-Healthy shopping. 3-Healthy cooking. 4-Osteoporosis. 5-Diabetes prevention.

  9. Women Health and Safety “The Women’s Forum” Provides lectures and exhibitions which cover Diabetes, Obesity, Healthy nutrition, Skin care, Bone integrity, Mental health and Breast cancer.

  10. The Elementary Schools Project 1-“Educate the Educators”sessions. 2-Students’ Rights booklets. 3-Diabetic ID Cards. 4-Glucometers and supplies. 5-Worked with canteens on healthy foods.

  11. Fasting Ramadan SDEA conducted various educational activities for diabetics and the community at large: 1-Exercise Tips. 2-Avoiding dehydration. 3-Prevent hyper/hypoglycemia. 4-Avoid food waste. 5-Healthy eating.

  12. Fasting Ramadan SDEA website(in both English and Arabic) provides information on: 1-Diabetic cultural dishes. 2-Campaigns to teach the importance of safeand healthy fasting.

  13. Hajj and Diabetes SDEA developed “Hajj and Diabetes Guidelines” provided to: 1-The Ministry of Hajj. 2-The Ministry of Health. 3-The Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

  14. Media and Publications SDEA capitalizes on the use of media to support needs of diabetics: 1-TV, radio, interviews, interactive dialogue sessions, newsletters, magazines, and demonstrations. 2-SDEA website: educational contents for children, adults, and retirees.

  15. Mobile Unit The Outreach Programs (Mobile Unit) provides: 1-Screening for Diabetes & Obesity. 2-Enrollment in prevention programs. 3-Scheduled for schools, colleges, companies, sports clubs, and remote villages.

  16. Scientific Conferences SDEA sponsored a symposium November 12, 2013 titled: “Pediatric Care-Protect Our Future”

  17. Diabetes Prevention SDEA has launched an Obesity Prevention Program 1- Conducted at schools, universities, and the public. 2- 6 month duration. 3- Lifestyle modification. 4- Diabetic Prevention Plan.

  18. Diabetes Prevention Outcome targets: 1-Reduction in body weight by 10%. 2-Reduction in HbgA1C by 1.5 %. 3-Reduction in BP by (7 mm). 4-Improved work productivity by reducing sick time by 20%for the high risk individuals.

  19. Diabetes Prevention A-“Diabetes Cook Book” which includes: 1-50 healthy recipes. 2-Cultural foods (Low in calories and fat). B-Developed an “Educational Program for Cooks” in various sectors.

  20. Conclusion SDEA’s activities are part of its mission. Steps needed: 1-Curb the hemorrhaging of the budget of the Ministry of Health. * Over 30 Billion SR were spent in 2011 on Diabetics alone (total budget 70 Billion SR)!!!!! 2-Reinvest these sums in appropriate programs, leading to a healthier society.
