  1. The Observation Management Project & System Frossie Economou Joint Astronomy Centre, Hawaii

  2. The OMP team • Tim Jenness, Matthew Rippa, Kynan DeLorey • Remo Tilanus, Paul Hirst • Martin Folger • Ramped up January 2001 OMP

  3. Why the OMP • JCMT is flexing but with a high administrative overhead • UKIRT wishes to flex but cannot afford the overhead • The OMP will provide generic, modular and supportable tools to allow flexing with minimal staff effort • Will be usable wherever the ORAC-OT is used, including future instruments such as Michelle, ACSIS, UIST, WFCAM & SCUBA2. OMP

  4. The OMP System - what it is • A suite of software to manage the project cycle • Optimised for flexible scheduling • Has an interface to observation preparation (ORAC-OT) • Also deals with post observation management of information OMP

  5. The OMP System - what it isn't • Has no formal interface to acquisition or data reduction • It essentially deals with two things: • MSBs • Project Status OMP

  6. What is an MSB? • One or more observations • Fully reducible (includes calibrations) • Efficient length OMP

  7. OMP system components • MSB database • Query Tool • Project status database • Feedback tool • Assistant scripts & ORAC-DR recipes OMP

  8. Related components • Scheduling component for the OT • The OM (Chooser) / Translator / Queue (OS) OMP

  9. MSB.dia OMP

  10. OT interface • Mainly met by extending the site quality component • Logic via subversion of groups and folders OMP

  11. Feedback.dia OMP

  12. Progress • Prototyped the new techonology (CORBA communication) • A preliminary version of the XML OT has been delivered • Carried out proof of concept exercises of the MSB database at JCMT (ENA, RPT, RRP) and UKIRT (PH) • The interfaces to the JCMT OCS system have been defined • Currently prototyping the QT and Feedback tool OMP

  13. Upcoming • Technical document review in May • Test major system components on the UKIRT Service queue (circa July) • Meet start of Michelle common-user observing (circa October) • Comission on ACSIS (circa April 2002) OMP

  14. Summary • No technical risks • Maintaining project effort is the major consideration OMP
