  2. Vocabulary Building READ THE PARAGRAPH BELOW: The French system was an extension of Franconian principles. The long, the breve, and the semibreve could each be divided into either two or Three notes of the next smaller value. The division of the long was called Mood, that of the breve time, and that of the semibreve prolation; Division was perfect if it was triple, imperfect if duple. (Grout, 1964, p79)

  3. Vocabulary Building This was the example given in the book given to a group of teachers to read. No one knew the word prolation. After reading the passage with unfamiliar words, the teachers understood the importance of vocabulary building, as I know you all do as well!!!

Roughly 800 new words are added to the English language each year, and in the twentieth century alone the language grew by an estimate 90,000 words (Ayto, 1993; Riverdeep.net, 2000). • Therefore it is imperative that teachers understand how: • Proficient readers naturally enrich their vocabulary • To explicitly teach vocabulary • To meet the vocabulary needs of English learners and • To access struggling readers’ vocabulary

Researchers refer to children’s awareness of new words and their desire to learn and use them in speaking and writing as “word consciousness” (Graves & Watts-Taffe, 2002).

  6. 3 major avenues students’ learn vocabulary are through:

  7. Life Experiences: Students learn the meaning of words that are used in their communities. Students from rural areas understand terms such as barns, silo, combines, and corncribs; students from urban areas understand words such as skyscraper, taxi, and subway. They learn words through daily interaction.

  8. Vicarious Experiences: This includes experiences that include educational videos, television and reading a variety of texts. However, many movies and most television shows do not increase students’ vocabulary, because it focuses on everyday life issues they are familiar with. Researchers have found that students’ vocabulary develops through reading high-quality poems and books.
