  2. Contraceptive Pill • The food and drug administration approves the combined oral contraceptive pill • This pill was made available in 1961

  3. Sex and the Single girl • In 1962 Helen Gurley Brown writes Sex and the Single girl • This encouraged women to be financially independent and experience sexual relationships before or without marriage • Sold 2 million copies in 3 weeks

  4. Maternity Leave • In 1963 paid maternity leave was proposed. • Affordable childcare was also proposed in 1963

  5. The Feminine Mystique • February 19th 1963 The feminine Mystique was published • Written by Betty Friedian • Credited for starting the second-wave feminism in the United States

  6. Civil Rights Act 1964 • Bars employment discrimination based on sex or race by private employers or employment agencies

  7. Gay Liberation • Mattachine Society campaigned in Washington DC. For gay rights in 1962 and 1963 • The council on Religion and the homosexual organization founded in 1964 • It purpose was to join homosexual activist and religious leaders

  8. Death of Marilyn Monroe • American Actress, Singer and model • Born June 1, 1926 • Died August 5, 1962 from an accidental overdose • 1999 ranked sixth greatest female star of all time

  9. The Sex Revolution • Began in 1960 • Women took part in risky sexual acts • Encouraged sexual freedom • Women began to take control of the sexuality
