  1. The Unwritten Laws of Engineering Review by Committee on Early Career Development (CECD) IMECE 2005

  2. CECD Reviewers • 8 members of CECD reviewed The Unwritten Laws between September 23rd and November 3rd • Most participants work in small/medium-sized companies although a few had experience in large-sized companies • Seven participants working full-time; one participant is a full-time grad student

  3. Comments from Reviewers • Majority found that the book had good content overall • Many felt that the book was focused too much on large-sized companies • Reviewers who had received a copy out of school never had read it but now found that it had information that related to their current / future careers • Book was lost or thrown out during post-graduation moves to new locations

  4. Comments from Reviewers • Majority believe that the book needs to be expanded/updated in order to be more pertinent to recent grads • Incorporate information on working in small/medium-sized companies • Reflect current engineering education (soft skills and business skills are now taught in most undergraduate programs) • Add information for those engineers that are not interested in management and will remain in a technical job • Add “real world” stories relating to the advice in the book to make it a more interesting read

  5. Comments from Reviewers • Majority believe that this book is not currently worth the cost to mail to graduates “as-is” but were wondering if an online version could be posted • Many believe that there is definitely a lack of “What Engineering Schools Don’t Teach You” books available • Reviewers think that this book could be the basis of a larger/more comprehensive ASME book that would be well-received by new grads or transitioning engineers (ie: selling on amazon.com)

  6. Attachments • Comments from Reviewers from CECD CoP and via email
