  1. Unit 4: Imperialism Standard 10.4 Students analyze patterns of global change in the era of New Imperialism in at least two of the following regions or countries: Africa, Southeast Asia, China, India, Latin America, and the Philippines.

  2. Opening Activity • Read the following situation and then answer the four questions on the top right column on your paper.

  3. Due to a change in LEUSD policy, our High School will be the model that ALL schools must follow. The district has determined that the model will be of Great Oak HG. Here is a list of changes to Santiago that will be made effective IMMEDIATELY. • LEUSD will no longer have our mascots, instead we will now be known as the Wolfpack • The official school colors will be red and blue. • LEUSD cheerleaders and students must cheer for GOHSif our team plays against any of their teams. • Great Oak students can sit anywhere they want in class if they transfer into our schools, including your seat. • 50% of all fundraising money will go to Great Oak High School ASB • LEUSD students are not allowed to date Great Oak High School students. Violation of this policy will result in a Saturday School. Congratulations you have been Imperialized!

  4. What is Imperialism? • The takeover of a country or territory by a stronger nation with the intent of dominating the political, economic, and social life of the people of that nation • Write it in your own words. • Draw a picture to represent it.

  5. When Did it Occur? • During the Age of Imperialism from about 1850 to 1914.

  6. Who were the Imperialists? • European countries such as England, France, Germany, Spain, etc. • The United States • Japan

  9. Who became Imperialized? China, Southeast Asia, Middle East Africa

Why did Europeans become imperialistic? • Economic Reasons: • Industrialized countries wanted to take natural resources from other countries for their factories • To sell finished product to imperialized nations • Competition between European nations • Feelings of racial superiority • To convert people to Christianity

  11. Why is it Important? • The competition for land will be one cause of World War I. • The effects of imperialism on countries will lead to long lasting problems economically and politically.
