  2. What was the relationship between the railroad industry and the idea of Manifest Destiny? • Promotes westward settlement by easier transportation. • Transported crops/livestock from farmers

  3. How did the railroad industry influence the development of other industries? • Promoted trade • Transportation of raw materials • Transportation of finished products

  4. Describe the relationship between the railroad industry and farmers/the Grange? • Farmers did not like railroad industry • Railroads set shipping rates and eliminated competition in order to raise rates • Grange developed to help organize farmers against railroads.

  5. Changes in the West • Homestead Act—160 Acres of land for free if settlers would farm it for 5 years. • Major increase in westward settlement led to increased conflict with Native Americans.

  6. Settlers vs. Native Americans • Reservations created for Native Americans • Dawes Act—attempt to assimilate Native Americans into American society.
