  1. Journey of the Hero Separation Initiation Return

  2. Perseus • Separation – Banished from Argos with his mother Danae. Also sent from Seriphus by a king who wants to marry Danae. • Initiation – Fools the three sisters, kills Medusa. • Return – Finds and saves Andromeda. Kills her suiter at his wedding.

  3. Heracles • Separation – As the servant of King Eurystheus of Argos he was sent to perform twelve impossible tasks. • Initiation – The Twelve Labors. • Return – He is killed accidentally by his wife and is united with his father, Zeus, on Mount Olympus.

Theseus • Separation – Leaves Troezen to seek his father in Athens. • Initiation – Chooses to travel by land so as to encounter robbers and bandits. • Arrives in Athens – Is almost poisoned by Aegeus. • Separation – Leaves to fight the Minotaur. • Initiation – Minotaur Dead • Return – Has a sad reuntion.

  6. Jason • Separation – Jason leaves Iolchos to find the Golden Fleece. • Initiation – Builds a ship and holds games to pick champions as his crew. Completes three tasks with the help of Medea. • Return – Jason returns to Iolchos and Medea helps him kill Pelias. They move to Corinth where Medea has claim to the throne.

  7. Jason Gets Medea’s Help On the evening before Jason is supposed to perform his three tasks, he goes into the woods with Medea who gives him ointments and advice that will help him succeed.

  8. Jason’s First Task • Plow the field of the fire breathing oxen. • Medea anointed him the night before with a magic balm that protected him.

  9. Jason’s Second Task • Sew teeth of a dragon into the field and kill the army of warriors that grew. • Medea told him that he couldn’t kill them so he threw a rock in the middle of them and they killed each other.

  10. Jason’s Third Task • Overcome a sleeping dragon and grab the fleece. • Medea gave him a spray that would put the dragon to sleep.
