ABS/CBS Performance Testing • Purpose: To evaluate improvement in stopping distance performance with ABS and CBS technologies compared with conventional brakes • Testing conducted • DRI in Bakersfield, CA in 2008 • Tested motorcycles in different configurations: • Conventional • ABS • CBS • ABS/CBS • Test conditions: Dry asphalt, Wet asphalt, Straight line stops, Hand lever only, Foot pedal only, Both controls together, ABS “on” and ABS “off”

  3. Motorcycles Tested • Motorcycles tested • 2007 Yamaha FJR1300 with ABS/CBS • 2005 Yamaha FJR 1300 with ABS • 2006 Honda VFR800 with ABS/CBS • 2006 Honda VFR800 with CBS • Yamaha: 4 configurations tested • Honda: 4 configurations tested • One expert rider and six non-expert riders

Summary/Conclusions of ABS/CBS Performance Testing • Both the expert rider and non-expert riders in many cases outperformed ABS using single brake lever/pedal in rider best effort stops • However, with both brakes applied, ABS stops were more repeatable and shorter than non-ABS stops • Increased rider workload in applying both brakes at the limit resulted in less repeatability and longer stops without ABS • CBS stops were shorter than conventional brakes for single brake control applied • Agency plans to place Report in Docket in the next few weeks
