  1. IC CONTROLS Concerns in pH # 2: Coating of the Glass

  2. PROBLEM In a pH electrode they are two key elements: the glass and the reference. To be able to measure accurately there can be nothing coating the surface of the electrode. When there is coating the electrochemical signal between the glass and the reference decreases and the sensor loses slope and becomes more sluggish. In the process the sensor shows inaccurate results. When calibrating the slope will deteriorate until the sensor cannot be calibrated.

  3. CAUSE In a number of applications there are constituents that will coat the glass, such as Calcium Carbonate which is present in systems where lime addition is used for effluent neutralization. Coating of the glass causes poor contact between the glass itself and the process. Good contact by the electrode is essential for accurate speedy response in the process. Thus, to help keep the glass clean and responsive there are a couple of procedures that can be used to help.

  4. Two Cleaning Methods 75° to Flow Chemical Spray Cleaning

  5. Chemical Cleaning vs Turning Flutes 75° to Flow In any application, the more mechanical pieces there are, the greater the number of points of maintenance and repair there are in the system. IC Controls sensors are designed with two flutes to allow self cleaning and therefore uses NO mechanical cleaning, therefore, increased reliability and reduced maintenance .

  6. Angling the Flutes Insert the electrode with the flutes at 75° to flow, as seen in the diagram on the next slide. By inserting the probe at this angle a vortex will be created around the glass. The vortex will increase the velocity of the process around the glass and reference which will, in turn, hasten electrode response time and also keep the reference cleaner. As well, by turning the flutes to 75° the process does not directly hit the glass which will slow down the coating action.

  9. Angling the Flutes No Mechanical Parts to Fail Longer Sensor Life Less Maintenance Better pH Response Proven Technology Superior Design Better Results

  10. Chemical Spray Cleaning In application where the flow is stagnant or not linear angling of the flutes may not provide adequate cleaning. In these applications a chemical spray cleaner can be attached to the tip of the pH sensor. Mounting the spray cleaner on the tip allows timed intervals of automatic cleaning without operator handling or maintenance. Spray cleaning also allows choice of the best chemical for cleaning the pH sensor and improving response.

  11. Chemical Spray Cleaning The cleaning tip will spray a chemical at the tip of the sensor at timed intervals. This reduces the amount of manual cleaning required and saves time. However, when the chemical is not being sprayed an air source should be used in the cleaning line to ensure the process does not clog the injection ports of the cleaning nozzle.
