  3. 1st grade basics Important milestone year Time to be more independent and responsible Understanding an abstract world…moves from play into a world of symbols and concepts Learning from mistakes…may struggle for the first time… Be encouraging and be an example of how to learn from mistakes.

  4. Reading and Language Arts: ABeka Reading Christian based program • Heavy emphasis on phonics • Spelling • Language • Oral Reading Handwriting: D’Nealian

  5. Math text: Includes all Georgia Performance StandardsMath facts: Goal: Sums to 18 in 3 minutes.

  6. Science and Social Studies…Social Sciences Gain a better understanding of his/her senses Identify animals and classify them into groups Learn about life cycles Identify the United States and learn about continents and oceans Explore water and weather Learn about events in the past Learn about United States symbols

  8. Grading Scale S –Satisfactory: On grade level 80-100 W—Working towards progress 75-79 N ---Needs Improvement 70-74 U—Unsatisfactory 69 and below

  9. Odds and Ends: • Homework …make this your child’s responsibility • Test papers and “Weekly Progress Report” will go home on Tuesday. Sign and return all papers on Wednesday. • Carpool : THINK SAFETY • AM: Please arrive no earlier than 7:50am. Use supervised areas to drop off children. Parking… • PM : ends at 3 pm. Please do not pick up children “on foot”. After 3 pm, students are sent to aftercare. • Please NO CELL PHONES while driving. • Must have a written note to go home with someone else…New policy: NO EMAILS Emergency: Call office. • Conferences • Classroom helpers sign up
