  9. World war 1 “the war to end all wars” • Entete Vs Central powers • U.S. was part of Entete • By the end of the war the Soviet Union Emerged. • Also the league of nations was formed.

  11. Began on “Black Thursday” 10/24/1929 12.9 million stocks were sold in one day, share prices fell 15-20 percent. Stock Market Crash in 1929 Bank Failures Reduction in purchasing Across the Board American Economic Policy with Europe Drought Conditions The Great Depression 1929-1940

  12. Dust bowl(1930-1936) • A period of severe dust storms that caused agricultural damage. • It was caused by severe draught.

  13. Key Question # 6 • What side did the United States fight in during WWII?

World War II (September 1, 1939 – September 2, 1945) • The most wide spread war in history. • Allies vs Axis • U.S. was part of the Allies • Nazi scare • Over 70 million people were killed, many of whom were actually civilians. • Lead to the Cold War • Also formed the UN (united nations) which officially came into existence on October 24, 1945

  16. Attack on Pearl Harbor(December 7, 1941 ) • A surprise military strike conducted by the Japanese • The only other attack on actual American land. (besides world trade centers in New York)

  18. Key question #8 • How many times were atomic bombs used in warfare (non testing)?

Aftermath of 2 atomic bombings • The bombs killed as many as 140,000 people in Hiroshima and 80,000 in Nagasaki • Eventually led to the surrender of Japan anyways. • They were executive orders under former president Harry S. Truman. • The bombs proved the potential for “Effectiveness” and also proved that the United States had and wasn’t afraid to use them. • Actually the 2 bombings were the only bombings used in warfare.( non testing)

  20. Key Question # 8 • Why is the Cold War called the cold war?

Cold War (1947 – 1991) • United States vs. The Soviet Union • Also known as a passive War against communism. • Hence the “cold” bit. • Passive means it wasn’t necessarily an “deploy troops” type thing but was more of a paranoia/economic war. • The paranoia was pretty much caused by the imminent Armageddon/apocalypse/end of the world. • During world war II nuclear weapons were formed which were capable of annihilating the entire planet.

  23. The Jazz Age • Occurred during the 1920s around 1918-1929s • It is post World War I and pre Great Depression • Its end was the great depression

  27. McCarthyism • McCarthyism was the irrational fear of communism which many capitalist countries in the world experienced. • The term is coined after U.S. Senator Joseph McCarthy from Wisconsin • It is particularly associated with the united states during the “Red Scare” era

  28. Key Question # 10 • What was propaganda and what was it used for?

  29. Propaganda • Propaganda was a tool used by the government to scare its citizens into fearing Communism. • It was also used during WWII to support anti-Nazism.

  32. Forest fires is a reference to the spread of Nazism. • Political figures in above picture appear to be Hitler and Hirohito

  33. Public enemy era(1931-1935) • Around the 1930s various individuals were considered extremely dangerous to society.

  34. John Dillinger “Jack Rabbit” • Born June 22nd 1903- “july 22nd 1934 • Supposedly gunned down however there was some minor dispute about that. • Escaped Crownpoint maximum security jail. • The us department of justice offered $20,000 reward for his capture and 5,000 for information.

  36. Al Capone “Scarface” (Jan 17th 1899- June 25th 1947) • Bootlegged during the prohibition era of 1920s and 1930s • Was actually once a shoe shiner

  38. “Baby face” Nelson (December 6th 1908-November 27th, 1934) • Famous bank robber.

  39. Bonnie and Clyde • Outlaw criminals, who were believed to have killed at least 9 police officers • On May 23rd 1934 they were ambushed and killed by 4 Texas police officers and 2 Louisiana officers.

The Space Race • During the cold war the United States and Russia had an informal “race to space” if you will. • (shown on right the Soviet Unions “Sputnick” satellite also the first satellite to orbit the Earth, Shown on left American “Explorer” launched just 4 months after the Soviets Sputnick)

  42. People in Entertainment • President Herbert C. Hoover - Hooverville was named after President • John Maynard Keynes - British economist, who had theories that brought the United States out of the depression. • Oscar Micheaux - An outstanding black director, who proved that a black star system could exist. • Jack Simmons Jr. - Found oil packets on his land, and figured out what oil rights were worth and made a fortune. • Madame C. J. Walker -First American woman, black or white, to earn a million dollars.
