  1. Gwendolyn Brooks The Poetry and the Poet Presentation English 9

  2. Who is Gwendolyn Brooks? • Born June 7, 1917 • Her mom encouraged her to write poetry at age 7 • Received the Pulitzer Prize • Wrote several poems • Died December 3, 2000

  3. Maud went to college.Sadie stayed home.Sadie scraped lifeWith a fine toothed comb. She didn't leave a tangle inHer comb found every strand.Sadie was one of the livingest chicksIn all the land. Sadie bore two babiesUnder her maiden name.Maud and Ma and PapaNearly died of shame. When Sadie said her last so-longHer girls struck out from home.(Sadie left as heritageHer fine-toothed comb.)Maud, who went to college,Is a thin brown mouse. She is living all aloneIn this old house. “Sadie and Maud”

  4. Poetry Elements in “Sadie and Maud” • Rhyme-The repetition of sounds within different words, either end sound, middle or beginning. • Imagery- a picture painted with words

  5. The rhyme sounds like a song. It made want to listen to what was happening with these girls. I wondered if they were sisters. The rhyme kept my attention from the beginning to the end of the poem. See: sad girl sitting at home and a happy girl in college Hear: babies crying Touch: comb Taste: freedom Smell: Rhyme and Imagery

  6. What did this poem mean to me? • This poem meant that sometimes you have a choice between two things. This poem told me that I want to go to college instead of do something that I won’t like. Everybody has a choice with consequences.

  7. “Choices” by me There are two roads to take. What decision should I make? The left road is like a snake. The right road is very straight. Must I make the decision today? Oh, I think that I will wait, But there’s not much time to wait.
