  2. What’s wrong? • My mother said, “go do your homework.”

  3. Correction • My mother said, “Go do your homework.” • Rule: A direct quotation begins with a capital letter.

  4. What’s wrong? • “Why on earth did you go to the movie theater,” he asked, “Instead of school?”

  5. Correction • “Why on earth did you go to the movie theater,” he asked, “instead of school?” • Rule: When a quotation is interrupted into two parts, the second part begins with a lower case letter.

  6. Careful! Is this correct? • “Why on earth did you pay full price for a movie?” she questioned. “you know you can get a student discount.”

  7. Correction • “Why on earth did you pay full price for a movie?” she questioned. “You know you can get a student discount.” • The rule, when a quotation is interrupted into two parts, the second part begins with a lower case letter, only applies if it is all one sentence. If it is two sentences, like this, we go back to the first rule which says a direct quotation begins with a capital letter.

  8. What’s wrong? • “How many days are in September” Susan questioned?

  9. Correction • “How many days are in September?” Susan questioned. • Rule: All punctuation marks at the end of the quotation go inside the quotation marks.

  10. What’s wrong? • “I’m going to the zoo tomorrow.” Billy said.

  11. Correction • “I’m going to the zoo tomorrow,” Billy said. • Rule: Do not put a period at the end of a quotation followed by things like she said, mom asked, he explained, etc. Use commas, question marks, and exclamation points, but not periods. Periods end sentences.

  12. What’s wrong? • “You need to remember to raise your hand before you speak,” Mrs. Arcaro admonished. “But we all have so much to say!” Jerry blurted out without raising his hand. “Yeah. In the real world you don’t have to raise your hand before you speak,” Sally added. “True,” Mrs. Arcaro admitted. “But in the real world, people know how to listen to each other, too.”

  13. Correction “You need to remember to raise your hand before you speak,” Mrs. Arcaro admonished. “But we all have so much to say!” Jerry blurted out without raising his hand. “Yeah. In the real world you don’t have to raise your hand before you speak,” Sally added. “True,” Mrs. Arcaro admitted. “But in the real world, people know how to listen to each other, too.” • Rule: Make a new paragraph when a different person begins to speak.
