  1. USArray: Cascadia Initiative Robert W. Busby TA Manager Cascadia Science Planning Workshop LDEO June 29-30, 2009 Palisades NY

  2. Introduction • Feb 09: At NSF request, USArray submitted several ideas for consideration of ARRA funding, including redeploying TA in Cascadia. • April 09: NSF suggested a framework for linking a few specific ideas from PBO, USArray and OBSIP. • May 09: facility program preliminary plan due “Redeploying the TA in Cascadia”, Guidance: $2.5M, 3-5Yr O&M, 2010 mostly operational

  3. TA-2 Cascadia • 25 Broadband Stations with 6ch & telemetry • Permit, construct, install • Operated for 5 years • Data Collection via ANF to DMC—open data, real time. • Picks and Data QC provided • Includes Strong Motion Sensors

  4. TA-2 Cascadia Factors in Station Location • Existing Broadband Stations PNSN, BDSN, GSN, ANSS • Planned upgrades to Crest, PNSN or BDSN • Good Quality TA stations with existing vaults • Good Quality FA stations • Where’s a gap?

  5. TA-2 Cascadia A spirited debate ensued, thanks to: • Mike Brudzinski • PNSN: Paul Bodin, John Vidale • Ken Creager • Richard Allen • USGS Menlo: David Oppenheimer, David Croker • BDSN: Peggy Hellweg, Barbara Romanowicz, Doug Neuhauser • More debate welcomed!

  6. Budget Forming • Cost of Equipment • Cost of deployment • Operations: • Management • Array Operation Facility • Array Network Facility • DMC Analysts • Service • Telemetry Given a bottom Line and a period of performance, we solve for number of stations We’ve made no plans as to what happens next, Removing the stations is an additional $132,000

  7. Shovel Ready! Schedule Details: Preliminary Project Plan 15 stations by Sept 30 2010 10 stations by Dec 31 2010 Possible Scenarios 10 stations Oct 2009 15 stations June 2010 End of 5 year O&M is 2014-2015 Monitoring ASAP or in conjunction with OBS?

  8. Notional Plan

  9. Quarterly Plan 2013 2012

  10. Alaska 200 stations 85 km station spacing Existing Stations: Aleutians Juneau Color scale depicts levels of permafrost 2015? 2014

  11. Data Integration • What are the plans to integrate the data from onshore and offshore instrumentation? Is there a DCC involved? • Is this a deployment based task or a facility based task?
