CAREB – Who we are? • National organization founded in 2000 • Represents >250 members from >200 REBs across Canada • 11 member Board of Directors with representation from across Canada • 3 committees: • Membership and Communications Committee (MCC) • Conference Planning Committee (CPC) • Professional Development Committee (PDC)

Why are careb and it’s activities important? • CAREB is the only national association for REB Chairs, members and administrators, providing ongoing professional development and advocacy • CAREB provides education through conference attendance and workshops to develop compliant, consistent and principle-based REB review • CAREB serves on several harmonization initiatives as well as working groups in the development of standards and SOPs • CAREB membership allows REB professionals to remain ‘in the know’ on emerging issues, compliance requirements provincially (e.g. privacy legislation), in Canada and internationally (e.g. US regulations)

CAREB Mission and vision • Mission: to promote human participant protection in research. • Vision: • promote professionalism through sharing of expertise, experience, information and knowledge; • represent and communicate the perspectives and concerns of Research Ethics Board (REB) professionals in local, national and international policy development and implementation; • increase the visibility of the REB’s mandate, and advocating for the appropriate allocation of resources needed to thereby ensure the fulfillment of this mandate, including adequate research ethics review and protection of research participants; • provide education and resources needed to successfully promote ethical conduct of research.

Careb – what we do? • Hosts an annual national conference (concurrent with the CAREB AGM) • Hosts regional conferences (ONTARIO, ATLANTIC, WEST) • Hosts workshops • REB basics for new REB administrators • REB advanced workshops with topics including biobanking, international research and SOP development • CAREB can provide institutional workshops on request • Listserv and message forum to discuss issues relevant to REB professionals • Informational materials for new REB members and chairs • Involvement in research on research ethics, quality assurance and improvement projects • Advocacy on behalf of REBs and institutions to government agencies and organizations

Careb activities • Drafting and approving CAREB By-laws • As a new corporation, the CAREB Board of Directors has begun several important initiatives: • modernizing the CAREB brand • developing a strong, multi-faceted communication strategy • creating a more elaborate menu of professional services to all CAREB members • Website development Education Initiatives • REB Professional Certification Program • Staffing support to aid in the future growth of CAREB • Conference/AGM preparation/registration • Involvement with many national/international initiatives: • Alliance for Clinical Research Excellence and Safety (ACRES) • Collaboration Project with N2 • Canadian General Standards Board (CGSB) - National Standard of Canada for Research Ethics Oversight of Biomedical Clinical Trials

Careb Ontario + Special business meeting Friday, December 6, 2013 Li KaShing Knowledge Institute St. Michael’s Hospital The purpose of the special meeting (to be held during lunch) is to approve the amended bylaws, as required by CAREBs not-for-profit corporation status Registration is still open: http://www.careb-accer.org/content/careb-ontario-december-6-2013-registration-now-open
