Advantages • Whatever is posted is available 24/7 to students and parents • You don’t need to make copies • Helps those who are paper challenged • Great way to organize materials • It is a way to promote 21st century technology skills • Extends the classroom with: • Interactive practice • Ready made tutorials • Research sites

  4. Features You might like: • Calendar for your classroom • Announcements • Links • Contact Information • Document library • Slide Shows • Pages • For Different Periods • For Different Subjects • For Syllabus and/or Parent Communication • For Special Events or Simulations • For Homework

  5. Menus, Tabs, Ribbons, & Such Site Actions Tab Site action drop down menu Ribbon • Notice how it looks a lot like the ribbon of Microsoft Word • SharePoint has lots of “universals” in terms of icons and their actions

And we’re off… Some of us have accounts already set up- • You can go to your site and explore for a few minutes Others need to “set up” an account * • Go to Your Portal site • Go to site settings • ->Create new site • ->choose “team site” • -> name it • -> choose a url • -> click ok • Tadah! * Cindy Minter might be available to set up a traditional teacher account

Getting Started • Step 1: navigate to your site and log in: https://www.tracy.k12.ca.us/sites/rnewton • Step 2: site actions → new page • name your new page “home” • Step 3: site actions → site settings → welcome page • change the part that says “default” to “home” so it looks like: https://www.tracy.k12.ca.us/sites/rnewton/Pages/home.aspx

  8. Getting Started Continued… • Step 4: click on your name – this takes you to your home page • Your home page should now be the new page we just made. • Now you are ready to customize or edit.

  9. How to Create a Page • Go to Site Actions & Click • Go to new page & Click • Name new page • Click create • Now you are ready to create content! *You can always see the pages that you have created by going to site actions ->view all site content -> click on pages

  11. How to edit a page • Login in upper right corner. • Select ‘Site Actions’ in upper left corner. • Select ‘Show Ribbon’. • Select ‘Page’. • Select ‘Edit Page’. Make changes and save page. • Select ‘Stop Editing’. • Select ‘Edit Properties’ and select ‘View Properties’. Select ‘Check-In’. Select the Major Version (publish) option.

How to Upload Files • You can upload almost any kind of file (doc or graphics) • Word Doc • Excel • PowerPoint • PDF • Just like downloading to a hard drive or desk top, you can create folders to house the documents • You can upload all at once or as you create your content • Site actions->edit page ->insert -> click on upload file ->browse files from pc or memory stick

  13. Adjusting Navigation • Site actions → site settings → navigation • Click Current Navigation and click “Add Link” • Browse for page • Click ok You can change the placement of the page links on your navigation menu by clicking up or down

  14. Simplifying Navigation • Site actions → site settings → navigation • Unclick “show pages” • Cleanup the links – delete those that aren’t used Click ok

  15. Modifying Look & Feel Site actions → site settings →… Title, description, and icon url for graphic you have uploaded for header Type in title that you want to display *Don’t forget to click ok

  16. The insert tab is right here Inserting Links You can create links to other websites and files hosted on other sites I like to copy the link first, then… Site actions → edit page → insert → link Paste link and name the button that will display (it will be hyperlinked)

  17. How to insert a calendar Site actions → view all site content “create” → calendar → name it Click on the class page we’re working on Site actions → edit page Type an introduction to your class Insert → web part → select the calendar you made Save and Close Publish

  18. How to insert announcements Site actions → view all site content “create” → announcements→ name it Click on link in left navigation bar Click on + add new announcement→ type title→type message→click save You can also add attachments 

  19. How to add Picture Folder Go to all site content Click on create Click on picture library Name it Click on it in the left navigation bar Upload pictures
