Dhcp redundancy

DHCP Redundancy

  • Divide usable IP addresses into Static and Dynamic.

  • dynamically assigned IP addresses are divided among multiple DHCP servers

  • Each DHCP gets a scope (range of IP addresses)

Multiple domain controllers

Multiple domain controllers

  • Reasons:

    • Redundancy

    • Clustering – can’t cluster unless you have more than one domain controller

    • Presence of more than one geographical location

      • You can make remote sites read only

      • Read only receives updates from the primary domain controller. Two way updates on WAN might slow it down.

Domain controller setup

Domain controller setup

  • As directed to you in assignments, you must have static IP on servers with domain controller.

  • Add the Active Directory Role from the Server Manager

    • If this is the first domain controller, choose create new domain in new forest

    • If this is a backup dc, choose Add domain controller in existing forest. Give the existing domain name.

  • When finished, you have to do a dcpromo from the console prompt.

    • This is where you choose read only, if that’s what you want to do. Usually it is not read only.
