  2. What is considered recognition? • Recognition = providing rewards or prizes for achievement toward the attainment of goals • Geared more toward the affective development of student than on academic achievement

  3. Why should we provide recognition? • Positively influence students’ attitudes and beliefs about accomplishment • Rewards do not necessarily have a negative effect on intrinsic motivation.

  4. What are some methods of recognition? • Make exemplary work available online for viewing by peers, parents, and professionals around the world • Have students anonymously vote with rubric feedback and reveal those with highest score • Provide certificates • Audio emails with praise from teacher • Video conferencing for authentic audiences that give feedback

  5. How can I recognize most effectively? • Personalize recognition • Abstract symbolic recognition (praise) is more effective than tangible rewards (candy or money) • Use the “Pause, Prompt, and Praise” strategy • Use concrete symbols of recognition • Base recognition on clear standards of performance
