  1. ISAPS InsuranceProtecting the Patient

  2. Protecting the patient My name is Alison Thornberry from Sure Insurance and I work with Lloyd’s of London to create insurance policies to protect patients having cosmetic procedures. I also work with the International Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons and together we created a correction/complication insurance for aesthetic surgery & procedures.

  3. Protecting the patient What are the considerations for a patient when travelling for cosmetic surgery? Destination Clinic/Hospital Surgeon/Consultant Costs Travel What if I have a complication?

  4. Responsibility Who is responsible for protecting the patient against complications? Surgeon/Consultant Clinic/Hospital Patient

  5. Responsibility Why not the facilitator? They are the first point of contact for a patient Who did the patient first talk to, to discuss their procedure options and choices? At this early stage a patient should be encouraged to consider all risks!

  6. Travel Insurance From the moment your patient books a cosmetic procedure the contract has been agreed. Have they paid a deposit and what if through no fault of their own the travel is disrupted or they suffer an illness before setting off? What if they lose their luggage or passport? What if they have an accident on their journey? This is basic travel insurance coverage however nearly ALL insurance companies will refuse a claim if their customer is travelling for a medical reason.

  7. Specialist medical travel insurance • Make sure your patient understands that they need to check their travel insurance is valid if they are travelling for a cosmetic procedure. • Medical Travel Shield is normal travel insurance PLUS:- • Delayed recovery costs including living, accommodation and travel costs • Extraordinary medical complication (up to 2 million GBP) • Additional consultation costs if discharged but still unhappy with recovery. • 12 month return trip back to surgeon/consultant if a complication occurs.

  8. What else can the surgeon offer? By being a member of ISAPS – International Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons. 350 Dollars annual membership offers access to many benefits including, journal, newsletters, discounts at ISAPS meetings around the world and discussions with like minded colleagues. Also an ISAPS Surgeon may offer ISAPS Insurance

  9. ISAPS Insurance What is ISAPS Insurance? This is cover, that in the event a correction or complication occurs within 12 months of the original surgery, the patient will receive remedial treatment at no extra cost to themselves. The patient does not have to travel back to visit their original ISAPS surgeon. IF their original surgeon agrees they can have a consultation with another ISAPS surgeon in their home country.

  10. Procedures Covered Abdominoplasty, Blepharoplasty, Brachioplasty, Breast Augmentation, Calf Augmentation, Cheek/Chin Augmentation, Facelift, Fat Grafting, Gluteoplasty, Buttock Implants, Gynecomastia, Liposuction, Labiaplasty, Mastopexy, Male Pectoral Implants, Otoplasty, Rhinoplasty, Thighlift and more………

  11. Diagnosed Conditions Some examples are:- Asymmetry, Malposition, Wound Dehiscence, Infection, Necrosis, Ectropion, Entropion, Excess fat Removal, Excess Skin Removal, Seroma, Haematoma, Encapsulation of Implant,, Extrusion of Implant, Excess Bone/Cartilage Removal, Bulky Tip, Nerve injury, Supra Tip, Infracture, Cartilage Necrosis, Painful Scar, Airway obstruction, Valving, Necrosis of Nipple or Umbilicus, Redundant Skin, Chin Ptosis, Parotid Fistula, Ear Lobe Malposition, Hair Loss and many more…….

  12. Who is the insured person? The Surgeon is the insured person and only they can decide if remedial treatment is necessary. Surgeon provides their patient with a guarantee of corrective treatment if they suffer a diagnosed condition Insurance pays (up to agreed indemnity limit) hospital costs, surgeon fees and anaesthetist’s fees.

  13. Costs The Surgeon may charge the patient for their guarantee of remedial cover. It is the Surgeons choice how much to charge. The Surgeon chooses how much to cover the patient for and the insurance premium is always 6% of the chosen cover. Example 10,000 Dinar cover would cost 600 Dinar. The Surgeon declares their patients for cover once a month in arrears.
