  3. www.tecnio.cat 1. Brief introduction to Catalonia Catalonia is known forits monuments, beaches, festivals, gastronomy andwine, sports, the Olympics and, of course, Barcelona. But there’s plenty more to tell about Catalonia: the business activity, the people and the government.

  4. www.tecnio.cat Catalonian main indicators Catalonia’s population is similar to those of countries like Denmark, Bulgaria and Austria. Its GDP is greater than Ireland’s and Finland’s and similar to those of Denmark and Austria. It exports more than Portugal and the Slovak Republic and about as much as Finland and Hungary. At €28,095 / year, Catalan GDP per capita is above the European average (EU-25) and on a par with those of Denmark, France and Germany. Source: IDESCAT, INE and the Ministry of the Economy. GDP provided by INE. • Catalan GDP accounts for almost 20% of Spanish GDP. • Catalan industry accounts for one fourth of all Spanish industry. • Catalan exports represent almost 30% of all Spanish exports.

  5. www.tecnio.cat Education - Universities Two of the top three Spanish universities in terms of educational quality are in Catalonia (UdL and UPF). In the same ranking, the UdG comes in seventh place and the UAB in eleventh. The UAB was the university that improved the most. The UPC and the UB are among the top three universities in terms of the quality of doctorate programmes. In terms of research quality, the UAB, UB, UPC and UPF are among the top ten universities in Spain. • 12 public and private universities • More than 227,000 students • More than 400 different degrees Source: CYD Report, 2008. European Higher Education Area In 1999, 29 European countries signed the Bologna Declaration, which aims to create a European area of higher education by 2010. R&D Activities: Catalan universities comprise 33 university research institutes focused on scientific and technical research, and 14,000 professors who develop research activities. Universities are now able to hire internationally without asking for government permission.

  11. www.tecnio.cat Catalan Framework Scientific production in Catalunya has reached a volume of almost 15.000 papers, this number means an increase of 12,11% from 2003 to 2008 (8.393 documents) and represents for the first time more than one fourth of the Spanish scientific production (26,1%). Spain is the 9th country worldwide in scientific production volume.   20. www.tecnio.cat What is IT Network? It’s a program that it has for goal to increase the technology transfer between the university world and the entrepreneurial world. If they achieve it, they will obtain a certificate from ACC1O, saying that they have the correct services on quality and It will be valid for two years. • Excellence of R+D: • All the centers are characterized for their capacity to manage projects on advanced research. • Entrepreneur-Scientific Leadership: • The network encourages academics to think like company directors, and imposes rigorous standards for business plans and marketing strategies. • Official Common Brand:

  29. www.tecnio.cat MTG – Music Technolgy Group Universitat Pompeu Fabra Music Technology Group is specialized in sound and music computing. With more than 40 researchers coming from different and complementary disciplines, the MTG carries out research on topics such as audio signal processing; sound and music description; musical interfaces; and sound and music network communities. The MTG combines basic engineering strengths in Signal Processing, Machine Learning and Human Computer Interaction with multidisciplinary methodologies coming from other fields.

  30. www.tecnio.cat CD6 – Centre for Sensor, Instrument and Systems Development Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya CD6 mission is to provide services to companies and to carry out technological innovation projects in the field of optical engineering. The CD6 team, which consists of around thirty researchers, skilled technicians and research fellows, carries out important applied research and technology transfer activities. This team includes specialists in optics, electronics, computer science and mechanics who are skilled at performing interdisciplinary work. The work carried out at the CD6 has resulted in numerous publications in internationally renowned journals, patents and spin-off companies.
