2. Les objectifs: • To refresh how we form and use the imperfect • Remind you / introduce you to the conditional tense

3. D’abord, l’imparfait ... • L’imparfait is used to describe an ongoing event in the past: • I used to live in France, … • It was sunny, … • When I was younger, ... by contrast, the passé composé is used to talk about events / specific actions.

4. former l’imparfait 1st, take the nous form and chop off the ending –ons • parler – to speak • nous parlons • parl___ • je parlais • tu parlais • il / elle parlait • nous parlions • vous parliez • ils / elles parlaient then add the imparfait endings je __aistu __ais il __ait nous __ions vous __iez ils ___ aient

6. Mixing the tenses for maximum effect. The imparfait is also used to describe something that was going on in the past when another event or action (in the passé composé) interrupted it. I was reading my book when the doorbell rang. He was walking down the street when lightning struck.
