Factoring a trinomial of the form x2+bx+c • You can use factoring to write a trinomial as a product of 2 binomials x2+bx+c = (x+m)(x+n) = x2+(m+n)x + mn So the sum of m and n must be equal to b (m+n=b) and the product of m and n must be equal to c (mn=c) If c>0 then m and n have like signs. If c<0 then m and n have unlike signs.

  7. Factoring trinomials in 2 variables • You can use factoring to write a trinomial in 2 variables as a product of 2 binomials x2+bxy+cy2 = (x+my)(x+ny) = x2+(m+n)xy + mny2 Examples: 1) 2)
