What is our purpose of the IEP unit? • ELO: • I will use goal-directed persistence in my daily life. • I will use metacognition successfully in my daily life. • Learning Target • I will understand the purpose of an IEP. • I will understand the basic components of my IEP. • I will understand my disability • I will understand my IEP accommodations. • I will begin to understand when it is appropriate to use my accommodations • I will understand and update my IEP goals. • I will understand the importance of making progress on my IEP goals. • I will begin to monitor my IEP goals

LAW OF IDEA • IDEA was originally enacted by Congress in 1975 to ensure that children with disabilities have the opportunity to receive a free appropriate public education, just like other children.  • The law has been revised many times over the years. • The most recent amendments were passed by Congress in December 2004, with final regulations published in August 2006 • It ensures that ALL STUDENTS have a free and appropriate education.

  9. What is an I.E.P.? • Individualized Education Plan • Is a written document that's developed for each public school child who is eligible for special education. The IEP is created through a team effort and reviewed at least once a year. • It is throughout the United States; every school. • Special education is for any student who has a disability that affects their ability to be successful in mainstream school. • Most special education disability areas are NOT due to intelligence!

What is the purpose? • The purpose is to make ALL students success at school. • The purpose is to create a plan for ALL students to be successful at school. • The purpose is monitor students that are struggling to make sure they are making progress to be successful at school. The purpose is to ensure an appropriate education for all students.

Why should I care about an IEP? • You have one! • It determines your classes. • It determines your case manager. • It determines your accommodations • It determines what you need to work on. • It is a legal document about it; it follows you throughout your school career. • It determines your school life!!!!!!
