  2. One of the best ways to find references to primary resources Is to look in secondary resources

  3. There are many types of secondary resources • Reference lists in publications • Self-standing bibliographies • Review papers • Bibliographic databases* • Library catalogues*

  4. But you must look in the right places!

  5. References to different kinds of primary resources are in different kinds of secondary resources

  6. To find references to journal articles • First try bibliographic (reference) databases • Topic focused • Index selected journals • Examples: Medline/PubMed, ERIC, CINAHL

  7. To find references to books • First try library catalogues • Often are OPACs • List ‘holdings’ of library

  8. To find references to grey literature • First try special grey literature sources such as Popline • Also check library catalogues

  9. To find all types of references • Look in reference lists • Look in bibliographies • Look in review articles

  10. Sounds easy, but….. Can be harder than you think!
