  2. Droughts are extended periods of well below normal rainfall; usually occur with a shift in global wind patterns; associated with persistent high pressure systems • Heat wave – an extended period of above normal temperatures; formed by high pressure systems as well Droughts and Heat Waves

  3. A cold wave is an extended period of below normal temperatures; also brought on by high pressure systems; systems are arctic or polar in nature Cold Waves

  4. The heat index assesses the impact of humidity combined with excessive heat on the human body • The wind-chill factor estimates the heat loss from human skin caused by a combination of cold air and wind Heat Index
