How I spent my Summer (2012) Vacation… • Indexed 1 research monograph • Revised and Re-submitted 2 journal articles • Proofed 1 article for publication • Taught two classes, networked, and conducted research in Guadalajara, Mexico (contracted food poisoning) • Traveled to Central America to network and conduct research (contracted malaria in Belize) • Wrote and submitted 1 chapter for a book • Wrote and submitted 1 journal article • Reviewed 3 papers • Continued progress on multiple research projects • Served as an external P&T reviewer for a tenure case @ the University of Toledo

My Research Areas • Primary Research interests, by theme: • the intersection of international business and (sustainable/economic) development • cross-border business and economic phenomena • (Latino) entrepreneurship • microenterprise development • Primary Research interests, by geography: • Central America & Mexico • U.S.-Mexico borderlands • Midwest (emerging research interest)

Research Output – My Story • Terminal degree earned in December 2000 • Arrived @ CMU as an Assistant Professor, August 2002 • Achieved the rank of Full Professor in 2007 • Since 2002, have published/accepted for publication: • 60 journal articles • 1 research monograph • 7 book chapters • Also: • 11 manuscripts currently under various stages of review • 31 conference papers • 21 book reviews • 2 federal grants ($600k [50/50 match]), assist with another ($300k) • Ad-Hoc Reviewer for 12 different journals

Selective Research Related Awards/Appointments: • 2010-2011 Hazelton MBA Faculty Excellence Award, CMU. • Named the Jerry and Felicia Campbell Endowed Professor for Research, College of Business, CMU, 2012-2013 (award period). • Research Mentor, College of Business, CMU, 2007-present. • 2004-2005 winner of CMU’s Provost's Award for Research and Creative Activity. • Winner of the Sturgis Leavitt Article Prize for SECOLAS (The Southeastern Council on Latin American Studies), Best Article Award, 2008. • Associate Editor, Management and International Business areas, American Journal of Business, April 2006 – April 2010 (term). • Faculty Affiliate – Latino Entrepreneurship: Julian Samora Research Institute, Michigan State University, July 2011-present. • Advisory Board Member: CRISP (Cluster for Research on the Informal Sector and Policy), University of Sheffield (UK), May 2012-present.

How to be Research Active @ CMU • Continue the momentum from your previous studies/institution(s) [Don’t lose time and energy in the transition to CMU] • Key Traits: Discipline, Persistence, Thick Skin, Hard Work/Drive, Work Space, Work/Life Balance, Collegial, Creative, Thrift, Family Support • Develop a Fertile Research Agenda & Research Stream • Access & Utilize Resources: • Time (teaching vs. research schedule) • Funds (ORSP/FRCE, department, college, outside grants) • Mentors (department, college, other [e.g., develop a research network]) • Develop research clusters through strategic faculty hiring

Advantages of Conducting Research @ CMU • Outlet/Publication flexibility (though a greater emphasis is being placed upon “quality”) • Sufficient internal resources (if you know where to find, access, and utilize them) • Reasonable research expectations (know your “evolving” departmental standards) • Flexible teaching schedule • Willing undergraduates • Good honors program • Excellent library • Potential development of research clusters (especially with an ageing faculty)

Disadvantages of Conducting Research @ CMU • Relatively heavy teaching loads • Low institutional name recognition • Relatively small pockets of research funds stretched across many programs • Historically cumbersome IRB process @ CMU (self-inflicted) • Few or no graduate students • Relatively large service duties • Little institutional recognition • Leadership turnover at ORSP (at least 5 different leaders in 10 years) • Uneven distribution of faculty rank
