J M Barrie • James Matthew Barrie was born in Scotland in 1860 • Ninth of ten children • He lived in his older brother David’s shadow. • David sadly died at 13 years old • His mother consoled herself that David would remain a boy forever • James ‘became’ David to become loved by his mother • James stayed short at 5’3”

  3. Everlasting childhood • James lived with the idea of an everlasting childhood • It became his inspiration for writing Peter Pan

  4. Why Great Ormond Street? • James and his wife Mary were childless, but loved children • They supported Great Ormond Street Hospital for many years • In 1929, he was approached to sit on a committee to help buy some land to extend the hospital.

  5. Why Great Ormond Street? • James declined, but promised to help the hospital in another way • 2 months later, he handed over the rights of Peter Panto the hospital • James claimed that Peter Pan had been a patient in the hospital!
